Save our fish stocks - reform the EU fisheries policy (2012)

Did you know that European fish stocks are now so depleted from overfishing that they only meet half our needs? The other half has to be imported from the rest of the world.

Friends of the Earth's marine campaign Marinet is working to reform the EU's common fisheries policy to:

  • stop overfishing
  • restore fish stocks
  • limit fishing in spawning and nursery grounds
  • redeploy displaced fishermen and vessels to help manage conservation areas
  • reestablish food security as a priority

In July 2012, the EU will be making decisions on the future of European fish stocks. Nottingham Friends of the Earth supported the campaign by sending our message to Gabriel Mato Ardrover who chairs the European Parliament Fisheries Committee and Richard Benyon, UK Fisheries Minister:Details of the campaign demands are available in a pdf document at http://www.marinet.org.uk/rocfp/4keypoints.pdf. Further background information is available on the Marinet website. Other photos from around the country are on Flickr.
