Protest walks to GM sites (1999)

RUDDINGTON: On Saturday April 10 around 100 people walked to a site in Ruddington where Monsanto is planting GM sugar beet. The walk was supported by Ken Coates MEP (Alternative Labour List), the Green Party, Liberal Democrats, Rainbow Centre, Veggies, Greenpeace, Women's Environmental Network and Friends of the Earth.

CROPWELL BUTLER: On Sunday April 18, around 30 people walked to the site of a GM oilseed rape trial near Cropwell Butler. They were met by the farmer who claimed that this was an official government trial. The crop is a winter variety planted last autumn and due to be harvested this summer. The walk was organised by an anonymous group who had leafleted surrounding villages.

MEDEN VALE: Around 50 people visited the ADAS Agricultural Research Station at Gleadthorpe, Meden Vale on May 15. This is growing GM oilseed rape for AgrEvo and GM sugar beet for Novartis. This was organised by West Notts FOE and Ken Coates, MEP for North Notts. A strong contingent from Ashfield Against Landfill attended, including newly elected Ashfield Councillor, Rachel Madden.
