In December 1999, Nottingham FOE wrote to local supermarkets asking when their products will be GM free, how much of their food is organic or locally grown, and what they are doing to reduce the use of antibiotics or pesticides, and to promote fair trade. Answers are summarised on separate page.

If you would like to write to your supermarket, you could copy our list of questions.

FOE's GM campaign has been very successful, with public opinion firmly on our side

FOE's national Real Food Campaign now has targets in three main areas:

GM OBJECTIVES

  • to ensure that supermarkets are really GM free
  • to enforce the Five Year Freeze
  • to block the passage of GM crops through the National Seed List (the final step to commercial production)

PESTICIDE & ORGANIC OBJECTIVES

  • government support for organic production
  • pesticide labelling for food and zero pesticide residues for fresh produce

Ask your MP to support the Campaign for Organic Targets.

LOCAL FOOD OBJECTIVES

  • to persuade retailers to source food locally
  • to increase proportion of food produced and supplied locally (e.g. box schemes, farmers' markets)
